FIRST

This past Saturday as many as 18 high school robotics teams from around the region gathered at the National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC) in Lawrenceville for the FIRST Robotics 2008 kick-off. Over the next six weeks these teams and others will build robots to compete in the FIRST Robotics Competition.

During the kick-off the teams received the rules of this year’s game (titled Overdrive), a kit of basic parts, and instruction on how to put them together. Among the local teams are Gateway, North Catholic, City High, Alderdice, Shady Side Academy, the YWCA, the McKeesport Area Technology Center, Central Catholic, and Sewickley Academy. The competition, which is now international, is meant to foster participation in science and technology.
